Oil Can Classic Tulsa Oklahoma April 9-11th, 2021
Event Overview
The 2021 Oil Can Classic Rope Horse Futurity took place last week in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This event was hosted at the Tulsa State Fair Grounds by Jack Bogart, in conjunction with the AQHA Horse Show. Along with the Open Heading, Heeling Futurities, and the Non Pro classes, the ARHFA held a special event Pre Futurity and Open Calf Roping Futurity as well. The event was a huge success with riders taking home over $110,000 in prize money.
Pre Futurity
The $3,000 added Open Pre Futurity, sponsored by Stevie Ray Von, showcased the upcoming four year old head and heel horses that will be seen at the World Championship Rope Horse Futurity in Fort Worth Texas. No stranger to the rodeo and horse show arena was Trevor Brazile, taking home first and second. Brazile’s horse, Relentless Big Shot, by Metallic Cat and out of Z Oh Six, scored an impressive combined total of 686.6, claiming the win by over 12 points. “Big Shot”, as they call him at home, made some big moves for only his second time in a judged futurity. Following closely behind with a 674 was Tuckin Away Buckles, by Show Me The Buckles and out of Tuckers Vintage. This was his first debut in the show pen.
Futurity Calf Roping
The first calf roping event of the year brought twenty four open riders and calf horses to Tulsa, competing for $13,700 in earnings. Finishing with the win was Low Cash Cat, owned by Colton Stone and ridden by Jackson Massey. Low Cash Cat is by Kit Kat Sugar and out of Gracefully Done. Massey marked a 228 in round one and 227 in round two before taking on a tough short go. A 224 was enough to set them apart from the rest, winning over $5,000. Coming in only one point behind in second place was Reysin On The Rocks and Cody McCartney. Owned by Double Arrow Quarter Horses, “Reysin” is a five year old stallion by Dual Smart Rey and out of Can Can Kitty.
Open Heading
55 horses and riders battled for the Open Futurity Heading win and over $5,000. Boom Boom Firecracker, owned and shown by Trevor Brazile took home the win with a combined total of 925.5. Also in second place was Brazile and American Greed, a 2015 gelding by Starlights Gypsy, owned by Lari Dee Guy. Brazile left with over $11,500 between his horses. Not only was Tate Kirchenshlager only 0.2 points from the second place win in the short round, he also scored the two highest scores of the entire show, marking a 233.9 on Whoneedsacocktail and a 234.5 on Born In The Boondocs. He took home $6,700 between his two horses.
Open Heeling
Progressively getting tougher throughout each round, the winner of the Open Futurity Heeling fought long and hard to stay consistent and claim the title. It took a 929.3 from Cole Davison of Stephenville Texas and CR Deeva, owned by Jay McCarley. CR Deeva is a 2016 mare by Woody B Tuff and out of Cee Dee Royal Tee ( x CD Royal.) They earned the top prize, taking home $6,265. Coming in second place was Chulatallic, a Metallic Cat out of Dualed To The Mac, owned and shown by John Phillip. They also earned over $5,000.
Non Pro Heading & Heeling
The Non Pro Heading and Heeling had a great turnout with 40 horses showing in both events. The youth kids made great runs with Will Jones of Allerton Iowa taking the win in both round one and two on his two horses. After some tough luck for Jones on the heel side, the gate was wide open for Walker Smith and Catalena A Man to take the win. Right behind him in second place was Paul Bogart riding the Arizona Sun Circuit Non Pro Heading Champion, Shesa Royal Cat. Paul was also able to capture the win in the Non Pro Heeling on his gelding, Two Eyed Meterman. They scored a combined total of 684.7, with the high score in the short round of a 223. In second place was Justin Walker and Genuine Lights, taking home a check for just over $2,000.
