American Rope Horse Futurity Association (ARHFA)
The American Rope Horse Futurity Association (ARHFA) was started in 2007 by Jay and Lindsay Wadhams. With roots planted deeply in the performance horse industry, from showing, to roping, to production, they recognized the need for an organization that would help promote the growth of the rope horse industry.
The ARHFA was formed to bring attention to the futurity aged horses in the same way that the cow horse, cutting, and barrel industries had already capitalized on.
Following extensive research among trainers, breeders, and owners, the ARHFA team was able to construct an event that would showcase the ability of 4, 5, and 6-year-olds, with an incentive payout for the 4 year-olds that entered.
This show format continues to provide new opportunities to not only train and show the next level of top rope horses, but to create an even playing field for all levels of competitors.
The next step to finalizing their event was to create a judging format. They wanted to showcase the futurity horses ability to make a run that was set up and executed with the precision of an AQHA Horse Show run along with the speed aspect of performing rodeo horses. This led
to the judging and scoring system that is currently used in ARHFA events.
The ARHFA hosts the only national events that use two judged scores and one timed score for a combined total. The judges’ criteria are based on four different maneuvers in the heading and the heeling. These scores are then added to the “time score”.
The ARHFA has been well received by the industry and has experienced growth beyond the expectations of both Jay and Lindsay. Competitors, clients, and businesses continue to benefit from the association and work together to promote the sport and lifestyle that they love.
Each year, events continue to grow and evolve, proving that the ARHFA fills a space that was missing in the rope horse industry.
